Schools
The St. Paul Lutheran School was built in 1888, by the church congregation (on Poplar Street). In 1890 the school ran out of room so they had to use the church building. In 1924 Fred Haar (a member of the church) gave the school a half block of land on Sixth Street (current Dewald Street Village).
In 1924 a new school was constructed with two classrooms, a confirmation room, and a full basement with a kitchen. In 1948 a new teacher’s residence was built south of the school building. In 1908 there were 70 students, in 1912 there were 73 students, and in 1952 there were 89 students at the school. In 1993 Kinder Korner Daycare (operating out of the AA Wollman home on Seventh Street since the 1980’s) moved into the Lutheran School building (on Dewald Street) and became Growing Dreams. In 2003 Growing Dreams moved to the Bethany Mennonite Church (on Juniper Street) and the brick Lutheran School building was torn down in 2004. Dewald Street Village was built in 2007.
Brookside School District #65 was located east of Freeman in section 29 of Rosefield Township (441st Ave).
Delzer School District #97 was located west of Freeman in section 34 of Wolf Creek Township (278th Street).
In 1884 Diamond Valley School District #56 was located at Peter “Spitzberger” Graber’s house on 280th Street. Joe P Graber attended the school in 1884. Diamond Valley Schoolhouse was built in 1894 by Peter M. Waltner and other patrons in the center of section 11 in Valley Township. In 1899 an acre of land was purchased 1/2 mile to the east (Highway 81) for the school. In 1905 Wm Borman taught the school. In the spring of 1951 the property was flooded as water went over Highway 81. Diamond Valley School served as the one room school house for the district until the school closed in 1969.
Fairview School District #96 was located southeast of Freeman in section 16 of Childstown Township (282nd Street). In 1874 school opened in the home of James A Childs in section 27. When Childstown and Salem districts were divided, the area kept Rose Valley School, District #12., subdivided #92-98. A school building was constructed in 1912 and served until 1970.
In 1893, Heilbronn Parochial School District #13 was built on 281st Street in the Heilbronn Settlement. In 1912 a (24 by 36 foot) parochial school was built to the east of the Heilbronn Church and the old school was used as a teacherage. There were 42 students in 1926. The classes focused on religion. Jacob Wenzlff taught school for 18 years. In 1943 the school closed and in 1954 the school building was moved to Marion.
Hillside School District #92 was located east of Freeman in section 11 of Childstown Township (445th Ave).
Huber School was located one mile south of the Heilbronn Settlement in section 17 of Valley Township (435th Ave).
North Star School District #66 was located east of Freeman in section 26 of Rosefield Township (444th Ave).
Ourtown School District #97 was located southeast of Freeman in section 29 of Childstown Township (441st Ave), next to Pine Hill Printery.
Progressive School District #20 was located west of Freeman in section 32 of Grandview Township (279th Street), next to Hutterdorf Church in the early 1900’s. The Hutterdorf Sunday School was organized in 1912. Re.v Peter J. Stahl taught the school and served the congregation. The school was moved 1 mile east during the 1930’s and operated until the 1950’s.
In 1880 Schlosser School District #15 was east of Freeman in section 30 of Marion Township (446th Ave) Peter J. Albrecht (born 1878) taught at the school from around 1904 to the 1920’s.
On January 12, 1888 Peter was not allowed to go to school because of a blizzard. (Peter’s brother) John Albrecht, Peter Graber, John Kaufman, Henry Kaufman, and Elias Kaufman all froze to death that day walking home from school. In 1909 the school was enlarged and a cistern was added in 1912. In 1925 a new school was built.
Sunflower School District #68 was located northeast of Freeman in section 8 of Rosefield Township (441st Ave).
