The first burials in Freeman were around 1886 in the Freeman Cemetery on Sixth Street (now the Freeman Memorial). In 1909 a new Cemetery was built located 1 mile west of town on 279th Street.
In 1913 the Salem Mennonite Church bought an acre of land from Henry P. Graber to build a cemetery, (1/4 mile east of the church). Church members who died from 1908 to 1912 were buried in the Salem-Zion Cemetery.
The Salem Zion Cemetery is located 1/4 mile east of the Salem Zion Church. The first burial was Johann Graber in 1875. There is a marker in the cemetery for the Children’s Blizzard of 1888.
