Tobias Unruh

Tobias A. Unruh was born May 28, 1819 in Polish Russia. He worked hard to bring our ancestors to America. Tobias was married to Helena Thomas and they had three children. Tobias was ordained as an elder at Karolswalde, Russia in 1853. He became a bishop with oversight of eight villages and two church parishes, Karolswalde and Antonofka. In 1873 he was chosen as one of twelve delegates from Russia to locate favorable territory for settling in America. He would return to Russia to bring his church back to America. The following spring he settled in Turner County, South Dakota and passed away on July 24 1875, from typhoid fever. Tobias was buried in the Schartner Cemetery.
