Goodridge Call Lumber Company > Farmers Creamery

Goodridge Call Lumber Company – started on Main Street just south of the Freeman Depot in the 1890’s.  J.E. Penner managed the company around 1906; selling lumber, coal, and shingles.  Pete Goertz later operated a cream store in the building.

In 1931 The Farmers Co-op Producer Association bought Jake T Gross’ butter business and started Farmers Coop Creamery (on Railway Street just south of the depot).  In 1956 the Co-Op began buying whole milk and the cream was churned into sweet cream butter.  Walter Bruun managed the business from 1933-1962.  In 1960 the Creamery began producing powdered milk and added a 75 x 100 foot addition for the drying operation.  At this time milk was delivered in the country by Shady Pond Dairy.

In 1969 the Farmers Dairy and Produce became Associated Milk Producers Inc“AMPI”. In 1979 AMPI picked up 350,000-600,000 pounds of milk produced daily from farms in a 35 mile radius of Freeman, a 35 mile radius of Parkston, and an 80 mile radius of Gregory.
