Mobil One Service Station

In 1924 Jacob A. Kleinsasser got a building permit for a filling station and started Mobil One White Eagle service station on the railroad grounds north of Thompson Yards.  

In 1960 Sorensen Surge Service was started by Chet and Marge Sorensen in their home. The business later moved to north Main Street. In 1972 Chet bought the Mobil Service Station at 144 S Main Street. In 1971 Sam Sorensen joined the business and in 1977 Tim also joined. Sorensen Surge sold and serviced “Surge” Dairy Equipment.

Cities Service Oil Company > Stern Oil

Cities Service Oil Co was built by Jacob J. Pollman in 1929 just north of the Mobil One Station.  J.J. Kleinsasser operated the business.  Around 1933 Mylo Preheim took over the business and renamed it Preheim Service Station

Stern Oil began in 1976 when the company purchased Aamlid Oil Co. from Bridgewater, SD. In 1977 they bought the Standard Oil property on Main Street Freeman. In the late 1980’s the business operated out of the First National Bank building.  In 2002 Stern oil built on Highway 81 and moved the business. The company sells gas, fuels, and oils.

Freeman Lumber Company

Freeman Lumber Company began on north Main Street in 1917.  Fred Stolp was the manager from 1921 to 1957.  The main building was torn down in 1940 and a new building was constructed.  In 1964 the Lumber Company was bought now known as Freeman Lumber Company. 

In 1901 the St. Croix Lumber Company office was built on Main Street. Freeman Lumber Company was incorporated in 1917, there were 52 stockholders. Dan H. Unruh was the manager from 1917 to 1921. Fred Stolp was manager from 1921 to 1957, when Marlan Wollman took over. By 1940 a larger building was constructed and the old building was torn down. In 1964 Freeman Lumber bought United Building Center Lumber Company and added more buildings.
